Cameroon’s Soppo Baptist Ex-students -Asobexs USAGear-up for 2019 USA Meetup in Denver, Colorado
For Immediate Release
Aurora, Colo. – Monday, May 27, 2019
While the African nation of Cameroon remains in a near civil war situation, alumni of
the former Baptist Teacher Training College (B.T.T.C), the Baptist Boys Secondary
School (B.B.S.S), as well as the current Baptist High School (B.H.S), Buea, in the
Southwest region of the country, prepare for an annual gathering planned for Denver,
Colorado, from July 19 to July 21.
Known by the acronym Asobexs-USA or the Association of Soppo Baptist Ex-Students in the United States, the association is led by a national chapter in the United States which includes affiliates in Texas, Atlanta, and Maryland.
The 2019 convention is being hosted by Asobexs of the Rockies, the affiliate in the
mountain west which includes chapters in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. This year’s
main gathering, holding at the Colorado Early College, as well as the Hyatt Regency
hotel in Aurora, is expected to bring together an estimated 250 participants that
includes alumni members around the world, their friends, families and special guests.
According to the group president Samuel Moka Effange the Colorado convention is an
opportunity to give back to their alma mater and to lend a hand to the academic
institution where they were raised.
“Asobex of the Rockies intends to promote and support the academic culture of one of
the first boarding schools in the history of the Anglophone territories in Cameroon,” he
said. “We intend to raise $30,000 USD through our fund-raising convention in
Colorado to construct a Borehole water system that will last for three years, as a safe
alternative of providing running tap water in the school, from which the neighboring
villages around the school who are also facing shortages of water could piggyback from.”
Highlights of the convention include a welcome ceremony to kick things off on Friday,
July 19, a professional development webinar, a community discussion and brunch, a
tour of Colorado, and an evening gala on Saturday, July 20, and an afternoon BBQ and
playtime on Sunday, July 21. A detailed program is available online through the Asobexs USA website.
The public is invited to attend these activities and to support the association as well as
the Baptist High School and college in Buea, Cameroon. The association is a registered
U.S. 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization with over 100 members.
